This means that you will follow several steps in your writing journey, pausing along the way to go back to a previous stage, then moving forward, then returning to the beginning, then moving forward again, and so on. This type of assignment uses the recursive writing process. These assignments will often require that you conduct research to find evidence to support your ideas, and you will be expected to do most of this work outside of class time. You may only have enough time in the class period to write a quick first draft for these types of writing assignments. This kind of writing allows you to show that you have read and understood the assigned material, or that you have practiced writing in a particular style. Examples include short-answer exam questions and timed writing exercises. Sometimes in college, your instructors will ask you to write several paragraphs, or even an essay, in a short period of time.
